Grievous Bodily Harm Charges: What You Need to Know

If you’ve been charged with grievous bodily harm (GBH), you’re probably

overwhelmed—and understandably so. GBH is one of the most serious violent charges

in New Zealand, and a conviction can lead to years in prison. But it doesn’t always have

to end that way.

What is GBH?

Under New Zealand law, GBH means causing serious injury—whether it’s done

deliberately, recklessly, or with intent. These charges are usually laid when there’s been

a violent act causing lasting harm, often involving weapons or significant force.

Depending on the circumstances, you could be looking at:

- Up to 14 years for intentionally causing GBH

- Up to 10 years for injuring with intent

- Up to 7 years for recklessly causing serious harm

These cases are heard in the District or High Court, and sentences are often harsh.

That’s why it’s crucial to act fast and have the right person defending you.

How I Help

When you come to me at Anj Singh Law, I’ll look at every detail of your case. That

includes witness statements, medical reports, and whether police followed proper

procedure. I’ll work out if there are gaps in the case—or if there’s room to negotiate a

reduced charge.

I’ve helped clients argue self-defence, challenge intent, and where appropriate, reduce

GBH charges to lesser offences. And if a conviction can’t be avoided, I’ll fight hard for

the most compassionate sentencing outcome—whether that’s home detention,

rehabilitative support, or a reduced prison term based on your personal circumstances.

Why Clients Choose Me

With 22 years of experience in criminal law, I’ve defended clients facing some of the

most serious allegations you can imagine. I’m not here to judge—I’m here to support,

guide, and fight for your future. My calm, strategic style has helped clients get bail when

police strongly opposed it, and secure lighter sentences through cultural, psychological,

and background reports.

When you work with me, you get straight answers, honest advice, and personal

attention because you’re not just a case file.

Let’s Talk

If you or someone you care about is facing a GBH charge, get in touch with me early.
