Need to Drive for Work?

How to Apply for a Limited Licence in NZ

Your Case. Your Future. My Priority.

Losing your driver's licence can be a major setback, especially if driving is essential for your employment or family responsibilities.  In New Zealand, a limited licence—also known as a "work licence"—can allow you to legally drive under specific conditions during your disqualification period.

What Is a Limited Licence?

A limited licence permits you to drive for particular purposes, such as:

Traveling to and from work

Performing essential job duties

Fulfilling family obligations (e.g., medical appointments)

It's important to note that a limited licence is not a right but a privilege granted by the court under certain circumstances.

Who Is Eligible?

You may be eligible for a limited licence if:

You've been disqualified due to:

Accumulating 100 or more demerit points

Certain drink-driving offences (after serving the mandatory stand-down period)

Other traffic-related offences

You can demonstrate that not having a licence would cause extreme hardship to you or undue hardship to others (e.g., your employer or dependents)

Each case is unique, and the court will consider various factors before granting a limited licence.

Application Process

1. Consult a Lawyer: Engage a legal professional experienced in traffic law to assess your eligibility and guide you through the process. Having a lawyer by your side will make the process easier and faster.

2. Prepare Supporting Documents:

An affidavit detailing your circumstances and the necessity for a limited licence

Supporting letters from your employer, doctor, or other relevant parties.

Evidence of your driving history and the nature of your offence

3. File an Application: Submit your application to the District Court, including all necessary documents and the applicable filing fee.

4. Court Hearing: Attend a court hearing where a judge will consider your application. Your lawyer will present your case and answer any questions the judge may have.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Applying without legal assistance, leading to incomplete or incorrect applications

Failing to provide sufficient evidence of hardship

Not adhering to the conditions of the limited licence once granted
